Don Quixote
A heroic comedy in five acts by the French composer Jules Massenet. French libretto by Henri Caen. Like many other works, the main character of which is Don Quixote, Massenets opera only starts from the plot and characters of the famous novel by Cervantes.
ABOUT THE EVENT
Inherited from the golden age of classical ballet, Don Quixote is a vivid example of ballet Spain with incendiary ensemble dances, castanets, fans, polka dot skirts, roses and combs in womens hairstyles.
Despite the title, this is not an interpretation of Cervantes novel. The basis of the plot and the reason for dancing was only one episode from the many adventures of the cunning hidalgo – the story of the failed wedding of the rich man Camacho (in ballet – Gaiters) with the beautiful Kiteria (Kitri), the beloved of the village youth Basilio (Basil). And Don Quixote in the play is far from the main character by ballet standards, his role is a pantomime–pedestrian, and all the dancing achievements are given to other characters.
